Sunday Conversation: Trevor Immelman

Immelman wins Masters, Woods 2nd (AP)

Tiger Woods swings on the fifth hole during the final round of the Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., Sunday, April 13, 2008.

Tiger Woods can forget about the Grand Slam for another year. And don't even bother bringing it up to the only guy at the moment with a chance. So, Trevor Immelman, think you can win the next three majors? "No, probably not," the South African replied, breaking into a toothy grin that blended quite nicely with that green jacket he was wearing Sunday evening.

Tears tell tale of Snedeker’s collapse (AP)

Brandt Snedeker's ever-present grin widened as he walked off the sixth tee and through the crowd of fans cheering him on. Four hours later, he was leaning against a golf cart, his face buried in a towel, trying to compose himself. "You know, I have no clue why I am so emotional. I was laughing outside, I'm crying in here.

Flesch comes undone at ‘Amen Corner’ (AP)

Steve Flesch was doing just what he needed to do in brutal conditions. Plod along, make a bunch of pars and hope it would be enough to win. Then he got to Amen Corner. After dunking his ball in Rae's Creek, Flesch didn't have a prayer. The left-hander took a double-bogey 5 at the picturesque 12th hole, where he knocked his tee shot into the water.

ESPN draws big ratings with Masters (AP)

ESPN's first year of Masters coverage was a big hit. The broadcast of the second round Friday was the most-viewed golf telecast on cable, producing a 3.1 rating. It's the first time either of the first two rounds of the Masters has drawn a 3.0 rating. Coverage of Thursday's first round produced a 2.2 rating.

Mickelson ‘moves’ out of contention (AP)

Phil Mickelson stared out toward the 18th green, shook his head slightly, rubbed his chin and tried to figure out where it all went wrong. On a day for going low, Lefty went south. Mickelson won't need to worry about clearing a spot in his closet for a third green jacket, not after a dismal Saturday afternoon at Augusta National.

Immelman’s scare gives new perspective (AP)

When Trevor Immelman was laid up in a hospital bed, wondering if that lump growing inside his body was cancerous, the last thing on his mind was winning a golf tournament -- much less a major. He thought about all his loved ones, especially 1-year-old son Jacob. "You want to hang around and be part of his growing up, try and make sure he turns into a good, upstanding citizen of the world," Immelman...

Chip shot helps Snedeker into contention (AP)

All those years scratching around the munis in Nashville taught Brandt Snedeker a thing or two. With his ball sitting on a big ol' knob at the back of the green -- and the green jackets from Augusta National gasping in horror -- he grabbed a lob wedge. And chipped. On that pristine putting surface. "I knew there was a couple members worried when I took out the lob wedge," Snedeker said, referring to...

Legally blind golfer, 85, makes ace (AP)

An 85-year-old legally blind golfer from southern Arizona made a hole-in-one this week on a par-3 course. Robert Dunham accomplished the feat on the third hole at Tortuga in Green Valley. Playing with a group of fellow blind veterans enrolled in a Veterans Affairs health care system program, Dunham's volunteer assistant lined him up with the ball, handed him a 9-iron and stepped back.

Augusta letting kids in for free (AP)

Augusta National is hosting quite possibly the coolest play date ever. Spit-shined and polished in polos and khakis, and on their best behavior, kids of all ages showed up at the Masters on Thursday wanting to know if Tiger -- "Mr. Woods," some politely called him -- could come out and play. "That's one of the single best things I ever saw," three-time Masters champion Gary Player said.

Ace gets Poulter in hunt at Augusta (AP)

The cheer was as loud anything Ian Poulter had heard, to be expected after a hole-in-one Thursday on the 16th hole of the Masters before thousands of fans perched on a hill above the green. He plucked the ball from the cup and held it with two fingers to salute the crowd, a most appropriate signal. That's his nickname these days -- world No.

Palmer’s tee shot kicks off Masters (AP)

Fifty years after Arnold Palmer won the Masters for the first time, he settled over the ball Thursday morning and hit a ceremonial tee shot that went so far he never saw it land. Blame that on the thick fog that settled over Augusta National. "Fifty years ago, it went a lot farther," Palmer said. "But the tee was a lot farther up." It was the second straight year that Palmer, a four-time Masters...

Par 3 Contest broadcast for first time (AP)

Barefooted kids frolicked on pristine greens. Caddies stepped up to take putts for the real golfers. Could this be staid ol' Augusta National? The home of the Masters let down its guard Wednesday and finally allowed the rest of the country to get a glimpse of the rollicking good time known as the Par 3 Contest.

Tiger Woods Feeling Good Heading Into The Masters

Tiger Woods Feeling Good Heading Into The Masters

Sunday before Masters is peaceful, perfect

The tires rumble down the gravelly path that leads to the media parking lot, spitting mud in every direction before finally settling down for the afternoon in a swampy stall. A five-minute walk through the front gates of Augusta National Golf Club produces pantlegs spotted with genuine Georgia earth, shoes shlish-shloshing with each step toward the hallowed grounds
